Top-Ranked Stanford Defeats No. 6 UC Irvine, 11-4

PALO ALTO, Calif. – No. 1 Stanford used a big third period to secure an 11-4 victory over No. 6 UC Irvine on the second day of the Stanford Invitational at the Avery Aquatics Center.
Reigning Big West Player of the Week McKenna Mitchell got the UCI scoring started at the 3:24 mark of the first period as the Anteaters would trail 3-1 at the horn. Keana Eldridge hit the back of the net at 1:47 of the second period to close the gap to 4-2, but Stanford would score again and lead 5-2. The Cardinal then took control hitting five unanswered to open a 10-2 margin. Mary Brooks (5:31) and Mitchell (3:57) would notch a goal each in the final stanza as Stanford would score one more time to win 11-4.
Goalkeeper Jenna Phreaner recorded six saves for UCI.
The Anteaters will face San Jose State at 3:15 p.m. in the final contest of the tournament.
