'Eaters Drop 5-2 Decision at Loyola Marymount

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The UC Irvine women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Loyola Marymount in its first road match of the year Wednesday at the LMU Tennis Center.
Freshman Stephanie Nguyen and junior Ashlynn Hall accounted for the Anteaters' points as they won their respective singles matches.
UCI (0-5) opened doubles play with a loss at the top of the lineup, but came right back at the No. 3 position where senior Cassidy Branstine and junior Hali Dickson upended Camila Tumosa/Micheline Aubuchon, 6-2. The 'Eater duo improved to 2-0 in their young partnership as they first teamed up against San Francisco last Saturday (Feb. 11).
The Lions (3-1) eventually secured the doubles point with Anna Romeka and Siobhan Anderson claiming a narrow 7-5 victory over junior Vivien Dvali and sophomore Stephanie Hazell on court two.
In singles, Loyola Marymount went up 2-0 before Nguyen got UC Irvine on the board with a straight-set triumph at No. 4. The San Jose, Calif., native shut out Romeka in the first set and continued to cruise to the 6-0, 6-2 win. Nguyen, who picked up her third consecutive victory, improved to a team-best 3-2 in dual match play.
LMU kept the pressure on the 'Eaters with Anderson topping Cassidy Branstine at No. 3. Juravliova then earned the match-clinching win over Dvali at the No. 2 position.
Hall tacked on one more point for UCI with a 6-3, 6-3 rout of Aubuchon at No. 6. Hall has not dropped a set since the Anteaters' match against San Diego State on Jan. 29.
UC Irvine stays on the road this weekend as it travels to the Pacific Northwest for three matches in as many days. The 'Eaters are set to face Seattle (Feb. 18), Portland (Feb. 19) and Portland State (Feb. 20).
