UC Irvine Suffers 4-3 Setback to San Francisco

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – The UC Irvine women's tennis team dropped another close match on Saturday, falling to San Francisco, 4-3, at Palisades Tennis Club in Newport Beach.
This was the Anteaters' third 4-3 setback in their four matches this season.
The 'Eaters (0-4) split the first two doubles matches, falling at No. 1 before evening the score at No. 3. Senior Cassidy Branstine and junior Hali Dickson picked up the victory as they topped Amber Del Rosario/Anna Sokiran, 6-4.
Hanna Borjeson/Joselyn Treyes-Albarracin then edged junior Vivien Dvali and sophomore Stephanie Hazell, 7-6 (11-9) at No. 2 to clinch the point for USF (1-3).
UCI tied it up at 1-1 in singles with junior Ashlynn Hall's 6-4, 6-1 triumph at No. 6. It continued to go back-and-forth as the two teams went toe-to-toe. Hazell dropped a straight-set decision at the fifth spot before Dvali dispatched Maxfield, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2. San Francisco then went up 3-2 after Sokiran handed freshman Constance Branstine a 6-3, 6-3 setback at the top of the lineup.
Freshman Stephanie Nguyen would keep the home team alive with a 7-6 (2), 6-1 victory over Treyes-Albarracin on court four. The dual then came down to the No. 3 spot where Cassidy Branstine fought back from a one-set deficit and saved match point to win the second set, 7-6 (2). Her comeback effort fell short, however, as she ended up dropping a 5-7, 7-6 (2), 3-6 decision to Genevieve McCloskey.
UC Irvine is back in action next week with its first road match of the season at Loyola Marymount on Wednesday, Feb. 15 (1 p.m.).
