'Eaters Stifled in Portland, 3-1
September 11, 2015 | Women's Soccer
PORTLAND, Ore. --- Women's soccer put in a hearty effort Friday night in front of 3,090 fans at the hallowed Merlo Field, but fell short in a 3-1 defeat to the host Pilots.
Portland (2-4-0) got off a quick tally as Noelle La Prevotte and Devlyn Jeter connected on an odd-man rush to put the Pilots up, 1-0, just 2:34 into the match.
UP continued to hold the possession advantage, and broke through for a second score in the 38th minute on some nifty footwork by Cecilla Pedersen at the top of the box to make it 2-0.
UC Irvine (3-3-1) took some of the momentum back right before the half as Clarissa Robles' throw-in reached Kiana Palacios near the touchline, and her flick found Alex Karlowitsch on the doorstep beating a Pilot defender to the ball and guiding home the 'Eaters' opening score to make it 2-1 heading into the half.
The Anteaters pushed hard to begin the second half many of the early shots and chances.
Unable to convert, however, Portland weathered the storm and returned to the other end and extended the lead to 3-1 on a goal from La Prevotte.
The loss ends the 'Eaters brief, three-match unbeaten streak, and the opening score for Portland ended Corey Tobin's shutout streak at 315 minutes. She also matched her career high with seven assists. The 'Eater backline added an eighth on the match.
Karlowitsch's goal was the second of her career. Palacios added her third assist of the season to lead the squad, while Robles now has assists in consecutive matches and 11 in her career.
The Pilots got multi-point efforts from La Prevotte, Pedersen, and Parkes Kendrick.
UCI completes the weekend in Oregon with a 12:00 p.m. match against Washington that can be viewed online via ucirvinesports.com. The Huskies defeated another Big West squad in CSUN 3-1 earlier Friday.
