NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- No. 5 UCI finished a spotless weekend to open Big West play with a road win, 11-7, at No. 7 CSUN on Sunday.
UC Irvine (15-6, 2-0) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first four minutes eventually taking a 3-1 lead into the first intermission.
The Anteaters built a four-goal lead in the second period, and Danielle Warde would complete her hat trick late in the second as the 'Eaters led, 6-3, at the half.
The teams jostled in the third period, and CSUN (13-9, 2-1) put in a goal with four seconds left in the period to keep the 'Eaters within striking distance.
The Anteaters would keep their distance as McKenna Mitchell buried her second of the match to get the lead as large as five before the final whistle blew for the 11-7 victory.
Warde would end with a game-high four goals. Mitchell was joined by CSUN's Mackenzy Fowler and Katie Kammer as multiple-goal scorers.
Kiernan Davis stopped 10 shots for the Matadors.
UCI takes a short midweek trip to UCSD on Thursday, Apr. 2, for a 6:00 p.m. match.
