LA JOLLA, Calif. --- The Anteaters and Tritons dueled at Canyonview Aquatic Center Thursday evening with No. 5 UC Irvine prevailing, 8-7.
UCSD (13-17) didn't play like an unranked squad grabbing the early lead and holding it until the final four seconds of the first quarter as Natalie Seidemann tied the match up at 2-2.
Danielle Warde took over the second period with a pair of goals giving UC Irvine (16-6, 2-0) the 4-3 advantage into the half.
The Tritons quickly erased the deficit, and proceeded to push across a goal with 10 seconds left in the period to send the match to the final quarter tied at 6-6.
UCSD even took at brief lead with 4:53 left in the match before Warde surfaced again with a big goal just a minute later to tie the match back up at 7-7.
The defense stood tall down the stretch and was rewarded with the game-winning goal from Destene Albers with 2:12 left for the 8-7 victory.
Warde's three goals led all players. UCSD got two-goal games from Lani Tittle and Kayla Fedler. Warde also led the 'Eaters with a pair of assists. Mackenzie Milham and Gabby Pierandozzi added assists as well.
Courtney Miller stepped up in net for UCSD with 11 saves and assisted on two goals. Jillian Yocum had six of her own along with a steal.
UCI's quick trip to non-conference play ends next weekend with a home weekend against No. 6 Hawai'i (Apr. 11) and No. 11 UC Davis (Apr. 12).
