No. 5 'Eaters Turned Away by No. 3 Trojans, 11-7
February 28, 2015 | Women's Water Polo
IRVINE, Calif. --- UCI and USC met up Saturday afternoon under friendly skies in Anteater Aquatics Complex, and the Trojans did just enough to stop UCI's attack and earn the 11-7 win.
UC Irvine (9-6) came out of the gate with the lead first as McKenna Mitchell buried a goal in the first minute. USC (14-1) answered at the 5:07 mark, and proceeded to run off four more goals to come away with a 5-2 lead after one period.
The Anteater defense clamped down allowing just one goal in the second period and cutting the lead to 6-4 by the half.
USC rebounded with four in the third punctuated by a timely snipe from Melissa Bergesen as the period expired to stretch the lead back to 10-5.
UCI closed the gap in the end as McKenna Mitchell dropped in her third of the match in the fourth period to finish the match, 11-7, in favor of USC.
Mitchell led all 'Eaters while Bergesen tallied four goals for the game-high. Danielle Warde came up big with a goal, two steals, and three assists in the match.
Victoria Chamorro stopped 10 Anteater shots while Jillian Yocum came away with six saves.
The 'Eaters take a detour next weekend to the Midwest in the Fluid Five Tournament hosted by Indiana. UCI and the Hoosiers play Sat. Feb. 7 at 9:30 a.m., and the 'Eaters will square up against Michigan later that afternoon and Hartwick on Sunday.
