
No. 5 Anteaters Defend Home Turf Against No. 14 Michigan

IRVINE, Calif. --- Fifth-ranked UC Irvine shut down the visiting Wolverines for the first 20 minutes en route to a 9-4 victory to open day one of the UC Irvine Invitational Saturday.
UCI (6-4) slowly built a three-goal lead with a pair in the first half from Danielle Warde, both assisted by Emily Carlson, and another assisted by Warde feeding McKenna Mitchell.
Michigan (4-6) was unable to solve the 'Eater defense finally getting its first tally midway through the third quarter from Ali Thomason. She finished with three of their four goals while UC Irvine continued to separate building a six-goal lead at one point before finishing the match 9-4.
Mitchell also finished with a two-goal match scoring her second on a penalty. Carlson finished with three assists while Destene Albers led the second-half attack with a goal and three steals.
Jillian Yocum stopped 13 shots while Emily Browning saved 11 for No. 14 Michigan.
UCI draws No. 4 Cal next at 4:45 p.m. to end the first day of the UC Irvine Invitational.
