Palacios' Late Surge Powers 'Eaters in Hawai'i
October 29, 2015 | Women's Soccer
MANOA, Hawai'i --- Women's soccer tested the nerves, but pulled out a 2-0 win at Hawai'i Thursday night thanks to two Kiana Palacios scores.
The game-winner came in the 84th minute after the UC Irvine (7-10-1, 3-4-0) defense began a 3-on-1 breakout. Shelby Lee fed a streaking Palacios who finished around oncoming Rainbow Wahine keeper Erica Young to earn the 1-0 lead.
Palacios added some insurance for good measure in the 88th minute as Clarissa Robles scalded a ball forward perfectly landing to Palacios whose header glanced off the keeper's mitts and in to stretch the lead to 2-0.
The insurance was almost essential as Corey Tobin came up with a sprawling save to her left in the final minute to preserve the shutout and secure the 2-0 win for the Anteaters.
Tobin ultimately finished with four saves in her seventh shutout on the year.
Palacios doubled her goal output on the season, now with four, to lead the squad, and put up a personal-high of eight shots.
Assists from Robles and Lee were nos. 3 and 2 this season, respectively, but Robles upped her career total to 12.
The Anteaters send off their season, seniors, and daylight savings on Sunday, Nov. 1 at 2:00 p.m. against UC Davis.
