Anteaters Stifled in Cal Poly, 2-0
October 23, 2015 | Women's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. --- Women's soccer dropped a tough result, 2-0, Friday night in Alex G. Spanos Stadium at Cal Poly.
The match almost turned on its head early in the 14th minute as Cal Poly (6-6-5, 2-4-0) drew a penalty kick. Robin Mertens stepped to the spot and fired left, but senior keeper Corey Tobin made a fantastic left-handed save to preserve the early draw.
The scoring opened up in the 30th minute after the Mustangs won a free kick 25 yards out. Elise Krieghoff slotted it over the wall towards the right post that Tobin was keen to it, but the ball found a way through her and inside the right post to make it 1-0.
CP held the advantage through the half as well as a 7-3 shot edge.
UC Irvine (6-9-1, 2-3-0) picked up the pressure to start the second half. The Mustangs weathered the storm and extended the lead in the 58th minute as McKenzie Flood redirected a ball by Tobin to make it 2-0.
The Anteaters had chances to climb back into with, notably a Shelby Lee try in the 85th minute right in front of goal, but the ball was chipped high.
Besides the few miscues, the 'Eaters did direct five of their nine shots on target while also giving up 17 shots.
The result hinders UCI's postseason hunt as it remains on the outside looking in with two wins and six points. It does stand with a game in hand still, and a pivotal contest on Sun. Oct. 25 at 1:00 p.m. travelling to UC Santa Barbara who currently sits among the four tournament-bound squads with 12 points.
