Women's Tennis Comes Up Short in Big West Tournament Final

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. --- The second-seeded Anteaters put in a valiant effort at Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Sunday, but were ousted once again by Long Beach State in a 4-2 defeat in the Big West final.
The 'Eaters (17-7, 7-1) came into the match shorthanded missing Ali Facey, who had teamed up with Franziska Goettsching in every match this season at No. 1 doubles. Goettsching partnered with Marivick Mamiit in the No. 1-slot, but before they could finish, UCI had already wrapped up the doubles point with dueling 8-5 results to take the early 1-0 advantage.
Facey's No. 4 position in singles was filled by her sister, Kat Facey, while senior Brooke Schweyer, a doubles mainstay for a majority of the season, jumped into the No. 6 position in the shuffle.
Early singles sets went the 49ers' way on four of the six courts. Goettsching and Schweyer claimed their opening sets, and Schweyer would complete the straight-set victory, 7-5, 6-1, for UCI's second point to reel in LBSU (20-2, 8-0) who had already assumed singles points at positions 2, 4, and 5.
No. 1 singles Sarah Gong looked to amend for losing an opening-set lead in her second set leading late in the set. Goettsching fell in her second set, and needed a third-set victory for a precious singles point, but her victory was halted near its end as Maeva Razakasoa stormed back to claim the fourth and clinching point for LBSU over Gong.
Sunday's loss marked the first time all season UCI had failed to capture the match after securing the doubles point. It had taken the previous 15 matches. UC Irvine finishes with a record of 17-7 overall, and has now dropped its seventh tournament final to Long Beach State in the last eight seasons.
