LONG BEACH, Calif. --- The Anteaters fell in a clash of Big West titans, 5-2, Saturday at Rhodes Tennis Center as 57th-ranked UCI relinquished the conference lead to the No. 53 49ers.
The squads split doubles early leaving it to No. 3 doubles pair Kat Facey and Sarah Stadfelt. They overcame an early deficit to send it to a tiebreaker and even needed a tiebreaker for that, but ultimately fell, 8-7 (7), to give LBSU (16-2, 7-0) the early lead.
The 49ers took control early in singles winning all six opening sets. LBSU would win three of those matches in straight sets to earn the four points needed to clinch the win.
Sarah Gong at No. 1 singles and Franziska Goettsching at No. 3 singles battled back to force third-set tiebreakers and wins for UCI's two points. Sarah Stadfelt also forced a third set, but dropped it, 7-5, giving LBSU its fifth and final point.
UCI (14-6, 6-1) wraps up the regular season on Thurs. Apr. 17 with a 1:30 p.m. match at Anteater Tennis Stadium against UC Riverside.
