No. 5 'Eaters Pull Double Duty, Fall in Double Overtime

IRVINE, Calif. --- The 'Eaters endured a marathon day with a pair of overtime matches, the second of which lasted into a second sudden-death overtime period, but ultimately going to the seventh-ranked Sun Devils, 9-8, Sunday afternoon at Anteater Aquatics Complex.
Izabella Chiappini lobbed a shot with time running down in the second sudden death overtime period to ice the match and give the Sun Devils revenge on the 'Eaters from a loss earlier in the year.
Both teams converted a goal in the opening overtime period before the long drought through nearly the next three periods.
McKenna Mitchell sent the match into overtime with a skip goal with 1:51 remaining in the match. She also provided the only strike in the opening period that gave UCI the 1-0 edge.
The squads would combine for seven second-period goals including hat tricks for UCI's Danielle Warde and ASU's Petra Pardi leading to a 4-4 tie heading into the half.
UC Irvine also had a pair of leads in the third period that ASU countered on each time.
Warde finished with four to lead all scorers. Destene Albers contributed had two steals and field blocks to go with her goal. Elsewhere, Hannah Croghan provided two assists in addition to a field block and earned exclusion. Jillian Yocum's eight saves and two steals nearly held up.
Sun Devil keeper E.B. Keeve also came up huge with 18 saves including one on a breakaway by Danielle Warde in the second sudden death period.
For the Anteaters, they fall to 11-6, but secured their highest finish in the UC Irvine Invitational at sixth. UCI hosts UC San Diego (Mar. 1) and San Diego State (Mar. 2) next at 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m., respectively.
