Fourth Quarter Fuels Anteater Victory

IRVINE, Calif. --- The sixth-ranked Anteaters were tested by No. 11 UC San Diego Saturday, however, UCI would close the match out on a six-goal run to subdue the Tritons, 13-7, at Anteater Aquatics Complex.
The rain held off just enough for the 'Eaters and Tritons to play Saturday, and early on, UCSD (11-7) held the edge with leads of 2-0 and 3-1 from goals by Jolene Guiliana and Alexis Wieseler.
Destene Albers struck at the 4:07-mark off a falling shot down by the left post to cut the lead to 3-2. That would spark a four-goal outburst to end the quarter for UCI including Albers' second goal to give UCI its first lead at 1:46 remaining and eventually lead to a 5-3 advantage through one period.
The offense slowed in the third and the Tritons caught the 'Eaters thanks to Guiliana's third and Wieseler's second knotting the match at 6-6 as halftime approached.
Third-period play raged on and the teams exchanged scores early on by Hillary Estrada of UCI and Melissa Bartow of UCSD. Jessy Cardey hammered home the go-ahead strike with 1:28 remaining in the third that barred down and rolled across the line pulling UC Irvine (12-6) ahead for good, 8-7.
The fourth period belonged to UCI as it outscored UCSD, 5-0. Estrada led with her second, finely-placed lob followed by Hannah Croghan's third of the match, and the rout was on with 4:12 left in the match as Kelsey Thornton was awarded for her play with a goal to go with her four assists on the match.
Jillian Yocum got better as the game progressed stopping seven shots overall and adding two steals. Jessy Cardey led the way with three steals and added a goal and two assists. The lone field block went to Danielle Warde in addition to her two goals and two assists. McKenna Mitchell and Ambyr Stewart each earned a pair of exclusions while bookending the scoring for the 'Eaters.
Croghan led all Anteaters with three goals matched only by Guiliana of UCSD.
UC Irvine welcomes in another San Diego schools in the Aztecs of SDSU on Sunday, Mar. 2, for a 1:00 p.m. match at Anteater Aquatics Complex.
