UC IRVINE FACES UC DAVIS AT SOCAL TOURNEY SATURDAY: Seventh-ranked UC Irvine competes in the SoCal Tournament this weekend, opening against No. 9 UC Davis Saturday morning at 9:20 at Long Beach State's Campus Pool.
UCI will face either top-ranked USC or No. 20 Pomona-Pitzer in an afternoon game, pending the morning outcome.
SOCAL TOURNAMENT: This weekend's SoCal Tournament features 16 of the nation's top teams, including 14 that are ranked in the top 15 of this week's Collegiate Water Polo Association poll.
Games will be played at Long Beach State's Campus Pool and the Joint Forces Training Center in Los Alamitos.
THE 'EATERS: Coach Marc Hunt's UCI squad is 8-4 overall following a 7-4 loss at top-ranked USC in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener last Saturday.
Sophomore Mitch Wise scored a game-high three goals for the 'Eaters and junior Winston Newland scored once. Junior Jimmy Friedrich, a transfer from USC, had 14 saves in goal for UCI. Friedrich earned his degree from USC in three years and is a graduate student at UCI.
USC led 3-1 after the first quarter and the 'Eaters closed to within one goal in the second and third quarters.
UCI'S SCORING LEADERS: Mitch Wise leads UCI in scoring with 35 goals and he ranks second in the MPSF at 2.92 goals per game.
Senior Trent Baxter has scored 25 goals, ranking 11th in the league at 2.08 goals per contest.
Junior Nick Pfeil has 19 goals, senior Max Parrague 15, redshirt freshman Alan Robertson 12, senior Sam Figueroa and redshirt freshman Jacob Mourer 11 each, and redshirt freshman Kyle Kittlitz 10 to round out the 'Eaters' double-digit scorers.
IN GOAL: Jimmy Friedrich has 65 saves in nine games and ranks second in the MPSF at 11.82 saves per game.
Redshirt freshman Michael Bailey has 53 saves in seven games and sophomore Alex Kazmier has recorded 33 stops in five appearances.
LOOKING AHEAD: UCI competes in the Convergence Tournament Oct. 8, opening against Whittier at 11:40 a.m. at Las Flores Park in La Verne. The team faces Occidental at 3:40 p.m. later that day.
The 'Eaters return to MPSF action Oct. 9, hosting UCLA at 12:00 p.m.
