UC Irvine struggled on the road with a draw at UC Davis and an overtime loss to Pacific. The 'Eaters get a chance to right ship at home this week and jump back up in the Big West standings.
OCT-HOME-BER: The 'Eaters rough weekend saw them crossover into October, a month that has gone in UCI's favor recently. The loss Sunday at Pacific snapped a nine-game winning streak in the month of October, but with two home matches this weekend, they still have a chance to preserve their six-match home winning streak dating back to Oct. 10, 2009. In that span, the Anteaters recorded four shutouts and allowed just three goals in the six matches.
TWICE IS NICE: UC Irvine can at least count on their getting the ball in the net. UCI has had their scoring boots on with 10 goals in their last four matches. The 'Eaters had a similar stretch of four consecutive matches with at least two goals scored earlier in the season.
They have not done it in five straight matches since the 2009 season. UCI has had nine prior streaks of four or more matches. Two of those streaks have lasted five matches.
The UCI record is seven matches that came in 1995 where they would score two or more goals in 10 of their first 11 matches.
UCSB GAUCHOS: The Gauchos enter Friday's match at 5-7-2. They are coming off a pair of home losses to Big West opponents. Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton each scored 2-1 overtime victories over UCSB.
One common opponent for UCI and UCSB is Santa Clara who the Gauchos lost to, 2-1, in late August.
They have also had a pretty good time on the road with a 3-1-2 record.
The Gauchos have scored 14 times in 14 matches. Dyanne Anderson leads the pack with four along with team highs in points (8) and game-winners (2). Erin Ortega and Erica Shelton have each added two goals, one game-winner, and two assists.
CAL POLY MUSTANGS: The Mustangs are 7-5-1 this season coming off an up-and-down Big West weekend. They fought off Cal State Fullerton at home, 2-1 ,in double overtime. They followed that with a drubbing at the hands of Long Beach State, 6-0.
The Mustangs have played three common opponents in Santa Clara (L, 3-0), San Jose State (W, 2-0), and Saint Mary's (L, 3-1). In addition, they have tied Pepperdine who was ranked No. 9 at the time.
Away from home, the Mustangs are 5-2 and have won their last three. A big part of that has been Tiffany Gummow. She leads the club with seven goals, 15 points, and two game-winning goals. Sara Lancaster has added five goals, two game-winners.
Their matches have been full of scoring with a combined 46 goals in 13 matches.
HOW WE MATCHUP: UCI is 6-18-2 all-time against UCSB. UCI has won the last three matches with a combined score of 7-1. Two of those matches came at home where UCI is 4-8-1 against UCSB including their last matchup in 2009 that UCI won, 3-0.
Cal Poly also owns the all-time advantage at 15-6-2. The schools have split the last two years, each winning on the road. UCI shutout the Mustangs, 3-0, in 2010 which snapped a nine-match losing streak against Cal Poly. At Anteater Stadium, UCI holds a 3-10-1 record when facing Cal Poly.
