Senior Salute: Judy Christopher and Sarah Devine
October 28, 2011 | Women's Soccer
This duo of hard-nosed 'Eaters have logged in thousands of minutes constantly antagonizing some of the nation's best playmakers and leaving them scoreless.
#20 Judy Christopher is in her fourth year from Ontario, Calif. as a midfielder and the team's captain. She has started in 78 of the 79 matches she's played in. The 78 starts is tied for second-most in UCI history, while the 79 matches is just four behind the UCI career record of 83 career matches logged by three different UCI players. Seventeen of those matches came as a freshman, and she has accounted for five goals, two game-winners, and 10 assists over her career. She has garnered numerous honors such as All-Big West First Team in 2009 and 2010, and NSCAA All-West Regional Second Team in 2010. Christopher is a criminology, law, and society, and wants to continue playing after college. She wants to thanks her parents most of all for their support over her illustrious career.
"There are no stats to display the incredible impact this young lady has had on the history of UC Irvine Women's Soccer. Judy is a unique player with a unique spirit for competition. She is fearless, relentless, uncompromising and we gave up a long time ago trying to find a player to replace her when this season is over. Judy has grown as a player, a teammate and a leader through her four years and it has been truly an honor to coach her. I am excited to see where her career takes her after our season and whichever coach is lucky enough to have will wonder how he or she ever coached without a player like Judy." - Head Coach Scott Juniper.
#12 Sarah Devine is a fourth-year defender from San Diego, Calif. She has logged 64 matches, starting 61 of them, for the Anteaters. Devine has accounted for two goals, both coming as a sophomore and one of which a game-winner, and four assists. She is a cognitive psychology major, and wants to continue playing soccer after her tenure here while also obtaining her teaching credential.
"Sarah is a special player and an incredible athlete. She cares so much about the game and wants to understand every thread of how the game works. She is one player that I can genuinely say asks too many questions!!! Sarah has developed into a player who earns the respect of her teammates every day and is one half of a truly outstanding central defensive partnership. I haven't seen a better central defensive partnership in any of the games we have played in the last two years, and we have played against some of the best." - Head Coach Scott Juniper.
