UC Irvine flipped all the right switches on Sunday and have their soccer machine racing toward the conclusion of the regular season and the Big West Tournament.
SENIOR SALUTE: UCI (12-3-2, 5-1-1) will wrap up the regular season Sunday and will recognize their seniors in their final regular season home match.
The class consists of ten players from all across California. A pair of defensive anchors will be represented in CoCo Goodson (Ramona / University of Texas), and Sarah Devine (San Diego / Poway HS) along with role players Kala Gabler (Apple Valley / Hope International Univ.) and Alexis Rafael (Stockton / Lincoln HS). Critical transfers Amanda Hardeman (Laguna Niguel / Santiago Canyon College) and Alexa Weigand (Pasadena / Pasadena City College) mixed with two, notable four-year standouts in Carly Crowder (Monrovia / Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy) and Judy Christopher (Ontario / Upland HS) come together in the celebration. And finally, the twins, Lexi Kopf (Sonora / Sonora HS) and Jordan Kopf (Sonora / Sonora HS) round out the senior field.
We will breakout down each player's careers and accomplishments throughout the week.
FOR A GOOD CAUSE: UC Irvine Athletics in conjunction with the UCI Campus Assault Resources and Education (CARE) office and Verizon Wireless is raising awareness about Dating and Domestic Violence at events from October 17-30.
Student-athletes, coaches and fans will wear purple in support of DVAM, while CARE peer educators will be educating attendees about the cause. Wear purple to show your support and bring old cell phones to donate to the Verizon Wireless Hopeline Cell Phone Drive. Any fan that donates a phone at Sunday's match against UC Riverside will receive complimentary admission.
UC RIVERSIDE HIGHLANDERS: UC Riverside has been the model of inconsistency in 2011 at 7-8-2. It has had just two instances of back-to-back wins or losses this year. In the last 10 matches, they have alternated wins and losses culminating in a tie in their last match vs. Cal State Fullerton.
The Highlanders hold wins against common opponents Mississippi State (3-0) and San Jose State (2-1, 2OT). In conference play, they have defeated Pacific (1-0) and Cal Poly (2-1, OT), but remain the only Big West school to fall to UCSB (2-0).
Nine different players have contributed to their 18 goals on the year. Andrea Morales leads the pack with four goals and eight points. Kayde Hensley is close behind with three goals and one assist with each player contributing two game-winners.
Three different keepers have split time with Jessica Olafsen being the primary netminder totaling 52 saves in 10 matches. She has allowed 12 goals in those matches for a 5-5-0 record including three shutouts.
HOW WE MATCHUP: UCI defeated UC Riverside, 1-0, last year at Riverside. The win gave the 'Eaters seven in the 10 matches between the two with one draw. That draw came at home where UCI is 3-1-1 overall against the Highlanders.
In 2011, UCI is 5-1 at home with a win in each of their last four home matches. UCR is just 1-4 on the road this season.
