SANTIAGO, Panama --- Former Anteater Justin Cassel earned his first win in the World Cup/Pan Am games after holding Venezuela scoreless in an inning of relief as the U.S. came away with a 7-4 win in seven innings.
Cassel entered in the bottom of the sixth with the U.S. trailing 4-1 and yielded a pair of singles to lead off the inning. However, Cassel induced a fly-ball out to right-field and received an out-field assist from Brett Carroll, who threw a strike out catcher Tuffy Gosewisch to get Venezuela's Ronald Acuna in time for the double-play. Cassel then ended the inning with a fly-ball to center.
The Team USA offense took over in the top of the seventh, mounting a six-run rally on a run-scoring hit from Chad Tracy and a three-run home run off the bat of Jordy Mercer.
Cassel is 1-0 and has pitched four innings, struck out five and has not allowed an earned run.
With the win, the U.S. moves to 4-3 in the second round and is 7-4 overall. The U.S. is still in contention for the medal round, but will have to wait until all games are finished tonight to find out its schedule for tomorrow. Check www.USABaseball.com for the latest updates.
