Nick Pfeil's Hat Trick Lifts 'Eaters Past UC Davis

 

LONG BEACH, Calif. --- Nick Pfeil scored three goals to lead seventh-ranked UC Irvine over No. 9 UC Davis, 9-8, at the SoCal Tournament Saturday morning.

Jacob Mourer added a pair of goals for UCI, which improved to 9-4 overall.  The 'Eaters face top-ranked USC for the third consecutive Saturday this afternoon at 2:40 at Long Beach State's Campus Pool.

Goals by Trent Baxter, Mourer and Pfeil gave UCI a 3-0 lead early in the second quarter as the 'Eaters never trailed in the game.

UCI led 4-3 at halftime before the Aggies tied the score at 5-5 on a penalty shot by Bernie Rogers with 3:47 left in the third quarter.

Winston Newland put the 'Eaters ahead for good at 6-5 on a goal with 2:59 remaining in the third.

Late third-period goals from Mourer and Pfeil gave UCI an 8-7 lead entering the final quarter.

Pfeil scored his last goal of the game with 6:56 left in the contest for a 9-7 margin before Chris Richardson of UC Davis closed out the scoring on a power-play goal with 6:02 left.

Jimmy Friedrich had six saves in goal for UCI.
