STORYLINES
UC Irvine is 11-4 overall in NCAA competition all-time, capturing national titles in 2007, 2009, 2012 and 2013.
The Anteaters return to the championship for the ninth time (2006, 2007, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2018, 2024), advancing to the semifinals for the eighth time in program history.
Head coach David Kniffin and Pepperdine's Rod Wilde are the only two head coaches to capture a crown in their first season at the helm with Kniffin winning in 2013 at Pauley Pavilion.
UCI assistant coach Michael Brinkley was a member of the Anteater team that captured the 2013 championship at UCLA and was named to the all-tournament team.
Sixth-ranked UC Irvine received an at-large bid into the NCAA Championship.
The Anteaters are 20-8 overall after 3-2 victories over No.16 Penn State and No. 1 UCLA in the Los Angeles Regional last week.
UCI has played 11 five-set matches this season, going 6-5.
Five of UCI's eight losses have come in five sets and all eight setbacks against teams in the Top 8 nationally.
UCI finished in a tie for third in the Big West with a 5-5 mark.
UC Irvine opened the season with 11 consecutive wins, a school record for victories to start a year.
It is the 13th time in program history the Anteaters have logged 20 wins or more and third year in a row.
BALL STATE BULLETS
UCI leads the series 7-4 all-time.
UCI swept the last meeting between the teams on Jan. 7, 2019 (20-25, 20-25, 22-25) in Muncie, Ind.
This will be the first meeting with the Cardinals in the post-season.
Ball State has made 17 NCAA appearances, competing in the championship for the second time since 2002. BSU made it to the national semifinal in 2022, falling to Hawai'i 3-2 in Pauley Pavilion.
The Cardinals were the 2026 MIVA Regular Season and Tournament Champions sweeping Loyola Chicago (25-22, 25-20, 25-20) on the strength of a .477 hitting percentage to capture the Championship.
Ball State is 26-4 overall, winning five in a row. The Cardinals have only dropped decisions to UCLA (1-3), Ohio State (0-3), Loyola (0-3) and Lewis (2-3).
