CLAREMONT, Calif. - No. 10 UC Irvine defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 12-5, at the Convergence Tournament on Saturday morning at Axelrood Aquatics Center.
Each squad netted two in the first quarter, leaving it tied up 2-2 at the end of one. The 'Eaters scored the lone goal of the second frame to take a 3-2 lead at the break. UCI outscored CMS 6-2 in the third to increase their lead, 9-4, heading into the final frame. The Anteaters added three tallies before the Athenas got one back in the fourth quarter, to seal the victory, 12-5.
BY THE NUMBERS: Junior Lauren Hett and sophomore Pippa Heaver led the squad with three goals each. Junior Sara Naulty added two tallies.
Hollis Munchoff, Chloe Patist, Vivian Bailey, and Annabelle Mundelius each netted one.
Five different Athenas scored for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Mason Spencer recorded nine saves in net.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Vivian Bailey took the opening sprint and created the first possession for the 'Eaters, which led to a goal from Bailey, with help from Hollis Munchoff at the 7:39 mark. Munchoff was whistled for an exclusion, which led to a power play goal for the Athenas at the 4:29 mark. Gabbie Granielo took an exclusion, leading to another goal for the Athenas on the man advantage to give them a 2-1 lead at the 3:00 mark. Annabelle Mundelius found the back of the net (1:24), with help from Madeline Kasper, to tie it up, 2-2, at the end of one.
Pippa Heaver scored the lone goal of the second period at the 2:49 mark, to give the 'Eaters a 3-2 advantage at the half.
Sara Naulty opened up the scoring in the third, with an assist from Hett at the 7:45 mark. Chloe Patist found the back of the net on the man advantage, with help from Naulty, at the 6:11 mark to increase UCI's lead, 5-2. CMS got one back (5:42) before Naulty netted another on the power play (5:21), with an assist from Deirdre Murphy, to maintain the lead, 6-3. Heaver added a tally, with help from Naulty, at the 3:13 mark before Lauren Hett found the back of the net on the power play, with an assist from Sydney Hagan, to boost the 'Eaters advantage, 8-3. The Athenas got one back (0:51) before Munchoff netted the final goal of the period (0:33), with an assist from Hett, to leave UCI up 9-4 heading into the fourth.
The 'Eaters went on a 3-0 run to start the fourth quarter, kicked off by a goal from Hett, with an assist from Heaver, at the 5:39 mark. Heaver then added a tally of her own (3:36), with help from Hett, before Hett netted her third of the game at the 2:48 mark to increase the Anteaters advantage, 12-4. The Athenas got one back before the horn, but it wasn't enough as UCI sealed the 12-5 victory.
