CLAREMONT, Calif. - No. 10 UC Irvine women's water polo team fell to No. 5 Arizona State, 16-9, on Saturday afternoon at the Convergence Tournament at Axelrood Aquatics Center.Â
The 'Eaters took an early 2-0 lead in the first, before the Sun Devils got on the board at the 5:18 mark. UCI netted one more before Arizona State netted three unanswered to end the first frame holding the lead, 4-3. The Anteaters tied it up early in the second quarter, before the Sun Devils tacked on four more to increase their lead, 8-4, at the half. Arizona State outscored UCI 5-2 in the third quarter to take a commanding 13-6 lead. Each team added three in the final frame as the Anteaters fell short, 16-9.
BY THE NUMBERS: Sophomore Gabbie Graniello and junior Lauren Hett led the 'Eaters with two goals each.
Pippa Heaver, Sara Naulty, Jess Reagan, Vivian Bailey, and Michelle Urkov each netted one.Â
Jelena Butic led the Sun Devils with five goals.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED: Pippa Heaver won the opening sprint, leading to a goal on the 'Eaters first possession from Vivian Bailey at the 7:36 mark. Heaver found the back of the net at the 6:43 mark to give the Anteaters an early 2-0 lead. UCI turned the ball over, leading to a goal for the Sun Devils at the 5:18 mark. Lauren Hett added a tally on a five-meter attempt (4:19) to increase the Anteaters lead, 3-1. Arizona State netted back-to-back goals (3:59, 3:08) to tie it up, 3-3. Chloe Patist was whistled for an exclusion, which led to a power play goal for the Sun Devils at the 0:08 mark to put them up, 4-3, at the end of one.Â
Sara Naulty found the back of the net on a five-meter attempt at the 7:38 mark to tie it up, 4-4. Deirdre Murphy was whistled for an exclusion, which led to a power play goal for the Sun Devils at the 7:03 mark. Bailey took a penalty, leading to a goal on the five-meter attempt for ASU at the 5:47 mark. The Sun Devils netted two more to end the half (5:05, 2:45) with the latter coming on the man advantage to increase their lead, 8-4.Â
Hett found the back of the net on the power play at the 6:22 mark to put the 'Eaters within three, 8-5. The Sun Devils added a tally (5:57) before Michelle Urkov netted one (5:17), set up by Hollis Munchoff, to cut the deficit to 9-6. Arizona State added a tally (2:53) before Bailey took a penalty, leading to a goal on the five-meter attempt (2:23) for the Sun Devils. Arizona State netted two more before the horn (1:38, 0:54) to increase their advantage, 13-6, heading into the final frame.Â
The Sun Devils netted two goals to open the final frame (7:37, 5:46) and boost their advantage, 15-6. Gabbie Graniello found the back of the net on the man advantage (4:13) to cut the deficit, 15-7. Arizona State added a tally (2:12) before Graniello netted another (1:43) to make it 16-8. Jess Reagan got on the scoresheet at the 0:05 mark, but the 'Eaters fell short to the Sun Devils, 16-9.Â
