LAS VEGAS, Nev. --- UC Irvine baseball opened up the Live Like Lou Las Vegas College Baseball Classic with a 9-4 win over SEC power, No. 25 Vanderbilt, Friday afternoon at Las Vegas Ballpark.
- Trevor Hansen went toe-to-toe with Vanderbilt ace Connor Fennell on the mound, but the offense got to each in the early innings
- A leadoff walk came around with thanks to a stolen base, wild pitch, and groundout for the Commodores to put them up, 1-0, in the first
- The Anteaters struck back with a key two-out single by Noah Alvarez to score two and take the lead, 2-1, in the second
- Vanderbilt responded in the bottom of the inning scoring runs on another groundout and a sacrifice fly for a 3-2 edge
- Hansen walked the tightrope with two runners on in the third and bases loaded in the fourth, but each time was able to make the pitch and keep VU within striking distance
- UCI had his back stringing together hits in the fifth capped by an Alonso Reyes RBI single to tie things, 3-3
- The sixth inning was when the Anteater offense went to work
- A walk and single to start the inning against Vanderbilt's reliever England Bryan came around on a pair of wild pitches and a grounder back to him as UCI took the lead and added to it, 5-3
- With the bases now empty, a Frankie Carney 10-pitch walk followed by a Zach Fjelstad singles got the really going again
- A Reyes hit by pitch, bases loaded Auggie Gutierrez walk, and bases loaded hit by pitch made it a four-run frame and 7-3 UC Irvine lead
- Ryder Brooks took the mound in relief of Trevor Hansen and held the line with a 1-2-3 seventh inning, and then scored a strikeout followed by a double play ball to escape the eighth
- Fjelstad added some ninth-inning insurance from a two-out opposite-field double to make it 9-3 UCI
- The Commodores plated a run in the ninth between Brooks and Peyton Rodgers, but he was able to get the final two outs to sew up the 9-4 victory.
UC Irvine 9, Vanderbilt 4
- Hansen finished his outing with 100 pitches while scattering nine Commodore baserunners to improve to 3-0 on the season and strikeout five
- Brooks was nails in 3.1 relief innings allowing a run after he left the game and striking out three
- The offense ran through Fjelstad with three hits, two RBIs, and a run scored
- The win is the first for the program over Vanderbilt in its third-ever meeting.
- UCI claimed its ninth win against SEC competition in its 21st matchup
The weekend in Las Vegas continues next up with a 12:00 p.m. first pitch on Saturday, February 28 taking on Oregon of the Big Ten.
