IRVINE, Calif. - No. 11 UC Irvine women's water polo team defeated No. 7 Long Beach State, 15-13, to finish in seventh at the final day of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational at Anteater Aquatics Complex on Sunday morning.
UCI and Long Beach State went goal-for-goal to start the first quarter, leaving it tied up 2-2 at the 5:58 mark. The Beach briefly pulled ahead before the 'Eaters netted the final two goals of the period to take the lead, 4-3, at the end of one. UC Irvine and Long Beach State traded goals once again to start the second period, leaving the Anteaters up 6-4 at the 4:54 mark. The Beach netted two quick goals to tie it up, 6-6, at the 3:26 mark. The 'Eaters netted three unanswered to end the half up, 9-6. UCI outscored Long Beach State, 3-2, in the third frame to maintain their lead, 12-9, heading into the final frame. The Beach netted four goals in the fourth, but the Anteaters added three of their own to seal the 15-13 victory.
BY THE NUMBERS: Junior Annabelle Mundelius led the 'Eaters with four goals. Redshirt junior Madi O'Hara recorded three tallies.
Pippa Heaver and Michelle Urkov each netted two goals. Lauren Hett, Mary Hassett, Sydney Hagan, and Deirdre Murphy each added one.
Chiara Amoroso led the Beach with four goals.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Beach converted on their first possession of the game to take an early 1-0 lead over the 'Eaters. UCI quickly found the equalizer when Madi O'Hara found the back of the net on the man advantage, tying it up 1-1 at the 7:07 mark. Long Beach capitalized on a five-meter attempt to pull ahead 2-1 at the 6:54 mark. Lauren Hett stole the ball and forced a turnover before Ella Walker tossed a cross-pool pass to Pippa Heaver for the tally at the 5:58 mark. The Beach netted one at the 2:39 mark to briefly pull ahead, 3-2. Annabelle Mundelius capitalized on a power play to tie the game up, 3-3, at the 1:47 mark. Heaver netted a long-range buzzer-beater to put the 'Eaters up 4-3 at the horn.
Michelle Urkov found the back of the net on the Anteaters first possession of the frame, building on the advantage, 5-3. The Beach answered with a tally of their own at the 5:12 mark. Mundelius netted her second of the game at the 4:54 mark to maintain the 'Eaters lead, 6-4. The Beach quickly added two tallies to tie the game, 6-6, at the 3:26 mark. O'Hara found the back of the net, with help from Sydney Hagan, to give the 'Eaters the lead back, 7-6, at the 3:10 mark. UCI forced a turnover, leading to a goal from Mundelius on the other end at the 2:28 mark. Hagan netted the final goal of the half on the five-meter attempt, padding the Anteaters advantage, 9-6, heading into the break.
Deirdre Murphy took an exclusion to open the half, leading to a power play goal for the Beach at the 7:24 mark. Michelle Urkov netted one at the 6:57 mark to maintain the lead for the 'Eaters, 10-8. Heaver was whistled for an exclusion, leading to a goal on the man advantage for Long Beach at the 6:34 mark. Hett capitalized on a power play, with help from Mundelius, to widen the gap, 11-9, at the 6:04 mark. Murphy netted the final goal of the frame, with help from Mary Hassett, padding the 'Eaters lead, 12-9, heading into the fourth.
Heaver took an exclusion to open the final frame, leading to a power play goal for Long Beach State at the 7:08 mark. Mundelius netted her fourth of the match, with help from Sara Naulty, to maintain the advantage, 13-10, at the 6:47 mark. O'Hara found the back of the net, with help from Heaver, to build the Anteaters lead, 14-10, at the 5:32 mark. The Beach added a tally before Mary Hassett got on the scoresheet, with an assist from Heaver, to maintain the advantage, 15-11, at the 4:01 mark. Long Beach State added two tallies to end the match with the 'Eaters victory, 15-13.
