UCI Drops 14-8 Decision to No. 6 Arizona State

LA JOLLA, Calif. - No. 11 UC Irvine women's water polo team fell to No. 6 Arizona State, 14-8, to conclude day two of the Triton Invitational in La Jolla.
The 'Eaters got on the board first to take an early 1-0 lead before the Sun Devils quickly tied it up. UCI netted two in a row to take a 3-1 lead before Arizona State found the back of the net to end the first period with the 'Eaters up, 3-2. The Sun Devils scored five unanswered goals to take a 7-3 lead to open up the second. UCI and Arizona State traded goals in the final minutes of the half to leave the 'Eaters down, 9-5. Both teams added two goals in the third quarter to leave the Sun Devils up, 11-7. Arizona State outscored the Anteaters 3-1 in the final frame to seal their win, 14-8.
BY THE NUMBERS: Freshman Michelle Urkov led the 'Eaters with two goals.
Lauren Hett, Sara Naulty, Hollis Munchoff, Madi O'Hara, Vivian Bailey, and Annabelle Mundelius each added a tally.
Millie Quinn led the Sun Devils with five goals.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Sara Naulty found the back of the net to give the 'Eaters an early 1-0 lead. The Sun Devils found the equalizer before Madi O'Hara added a tally to retake the lead, 2-1. Michelle Urkov netted one to increase the Anteaters lead, 3-1. Arizona State got one back before the horn to cut the lead to 3-2 at the end of one.
The Sun Devils went on a 5-0 run to open the second period and take the lead, 7-3. Annabelle Mundelius got one back for UCI before the Sun Devils answered with one of their own to maintain their advantage, 8-4. Lauren Hett found the back of the cage before Arizona State netted the final goal of the half to maintain their lead, 9-5.
The 'Eaters and Sun Devils traded goals over the third quarter. Arizona State struck first before Hollis Munchoff found the back of the net to make it 10-6. The Sun Devils netted another before Urkov added the final tally of the period to leave the 'Eaters down, 11-7, heading into the fourth.
Arizona State added two tallies to open up the fourth and increase their lead, 13-7. Vivian Bailey found the back of the net before the Sun Devils netted the final goal of the game to seal their win, 14-8.
