IRVINE, Calif. - No. 8 UC Irvine women's water polo team fell to No. 10 Indiana, 8-7, on day two of Polopalooza at Fresno State Aquatics Center on Sunday morning.Â
The 'Eaters and Hoosiers each held each other to just one goal in the first period. Indiana struck first in the second period, but Lauren Hett netted two in a row to take a 3-2 'Eaters lead at the end of the half. UCI found the back of the net first in the third before the Hoosiers added a tally of their own to cut the lead, 4-3. Madi O'Hara netted two in a row to pad the Anteaters advantage, 6-3. Indiana got one back before the horn to pull within two, 6-4, heading into the fourth. The Hoosiers outscored the 'Eaters, 4-1, in the final frame to steal the 8-7 win.Â
BY THE NUMBERS: Redshirt senior Madi O'Hara led the 'Eaters with 3 goals while Junior Lauren Hett added two tallies.Â
Freshman Sydney Hagan and sophomore Deidre Murphy each added a goal.Â
Kaitlin Elias led the Hoosiers with two goals. Jasmine Higgs recorded 14 saves between the pipes.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED: Each team held the other to just one goal in the first period. Indiana opened up the scoring at the 3:35 mark before Deirdre Murphy found the back of the net on a five-meter attempt (2:35) to tie it up at 1-all.Â
The Hoosiers struck first in the second period to take a 2-1 lead. Lauren Hett found the equalizer at the 6:01 mark before she capitalized on a penalty shot (1:30) to give the 'Eaters a 3-2 advantage at the break.Â
Sydney Hagan took advantage of a five-meter attempt to boost the Anteaters lead, 4-2, at the 6:41 mark. Indiana answered with a tally of their own to cut the lead, 4-3. Madi O'Hara struck on the power play (5:56) before finding the back of the net again at the 3:08 mark to pad UCI's lead, 6-3. The Hoosiers netted the final goal of the period to pull within two, 6-4, heading into the fourth.Â
The Hoosiers found the back of the net twice to tie the game at 6-all. O'Hara notched the hat trick and gave UCI the 7-6 lead at the 3:45 mark. Indiana found the equalizer at the 3:30 mark to knot the game up at 7-all. The Hoosiers took the lead with just 30 seconds remaining to steal the 8-7 victory.Â
