IRVINE, Calif. - No. 8 UC Irvine women's water polo team fell to No. 5 California, 16-9, in the final game of Polopalooza at Fresno State Aquatics Center on Sunday afternoon.Â
California opened up the scoring on a penalty shot before the 'Eaters found the equalizer on the power play. The Golden Bears netted two in a row, the first on a five-meter attempt and the second on the man advantage to take a 3-1 lead. The Anteaters got one back before California netted three in a row, two coming on the power play, to widen the gap, 6-2. UC Irvine and the Golden Bears traded goals over the remainder of the first to end it with California up, 8-4. The 'Eaters capitalized on a penalty shot to open the second period before the Golden Bears netted one of their own on the power play. UCI got one back on the man advantage before California netted three unanswered to end the half up, 12-6. The Golden Bears found the back of the net twice to open the third quarter, first on a penalty shot and then on the power play, to pad their advantage, 14-6. The 'Eaters got one back before the horn to end the quarter, 14-7. UCI and California traded goals over the fourth quarter to end it with a Golden Bears win, 16-9.Â
BY THE NUMBERS: Junior Lauren Hett and redshirt senior Madi O'Hara each netted three goals.
Sara Naulty, Chloe Patist, and Annabelle Mundelius each added a tally.Â

HOW IT HAPPENED: California opened up the scoring on a five-meter attempt before Lauren Hett found the equalizer with the man advantage at the 6:25 mark. The Golden Bears took advantage of a penalty shot and a power play to take a 3-1 lead at the 4:54 mark. Annabelle Mundelius found the back of the net at the 4:32 mark to cut the deficit to just one, 3-2. California netted three in a row, two coming on the man advantage, to pad their lead, 6-2. Sara Naulty added a tally at the 1:06 mark before the Golden Bears added another of their own to make it 7-3 at the 0:45 mark. Hett netted her second of the period (0:30) before California scored the final goal of the period to boost their lead, 8-4, at the horn.Â
Hett opened up the scoring in the second frame on the five-meter attempt to cut the deficit, 8-5, at the 7:17 mark. California took advantage of a power play before Madi O'Hara netted one on the man advantage to pull within three, 9-6, at the 4:13 mark. The Golden Bears scored three unanswered, the last coming on the power play, to end the half up 12-6.
California capitalized on a penalty shot before adding another on the man advantage to increase their lead, 14-6, at the 5:41 mark. Chlos Patist found the back of the net at the 2:40 mark to end the third, 14-7.
The 'Eaters and Golden Bears traded goals over the fourth quarter. California opened the scoring with a five-meter attempt before O'Hara found the back of the net at the 2:33 mark. The Golden Bears added a tally before O'Hara secured the hat trick at the 1:34 mark to end it, 16-9.Â
