'Eaters Draw Level with Washington, 1-1

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine women's soccer managed a draw Sunday afternoon against the University of Washington in Anteater Stadium.

Welcome Back
  • Sunday's match had a lot of tension as the Huskies returned to Anteater Stadium for the first time since the 2010 Sweet Sixteen matchup.
  • Both sides had chances early and shots on target, but the momentum really shifted in the 33rd minute
  • The Anteaters and keeper Laurynn Ziller were called for time wasting and Washington were awarded an indirect free kick. The Huskies took advantage putting home the shot from just inside the box and lead, 1-0.
Second Helping
  • UC Irvine did not take its foot off the gas pressing in the second half and putting up four of the first six shots including two on target in the second stanza
  • Clara Samson nearly leveled things in the 66th minute as a misplay from Washington's keeper giving her a 1v1 chance from a tough angle that she smacked off the post
  • The Anteaters did get level in the 87th minute earning a free kick. Chifumi Sasaki stepped up and put a brilliant shot on target that bounced off the UW keeper right to Ella Colombini who slipped a pass to her sister Mia Colombini to put it home and tie things, 1-1.
UC Irvine 1, Washington 1
  • The 'Eaters earn their first result against the Huskies in their 10th match.
  • Colomibini's goal was her second of the season with Sasaki and Colombini earning assists
  • Laurynn Ziller in net stopped two shots
  • Final stats were spread around with UCI leading in shots on goal (5-3), UW taking the edge in shots and corners, and the teams finishing even on fouls with nine each
Postmatch Thoughts
Mia Colombini - "P.J. moved me at the last second to shoutout P.J. Chifumi just had a perfect ball in, too low for the goalie to completely grab it. Ella had a really good follow, and you know I just tapped it in after that. It was a group effort by everyone."

"I feel like we always strive for a shutout. Having a goal go in is always tough. I thought we bounced back well and we fought hard to the very end. We always strive to win, but we came out with a tie, and I feel like our group worked really well to deserve that."

Clara Samson - "I think we adjusted well to the game plan. Obviously, it was disappointing not to come away with a win, but we learned a lot from the game. There's a lot to build on. We definitely felt the support from the fans."

"I think our back four worked really well together. Working with new players every week, coaching them, helping the freshmen. I think Jasmyne did a really good job, and they all have come together to work well."
