IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine baseball started off their weekend series against UC Riverside with a resounding 20-1 Friday night in Anteater Ballpark.
- The first three hitters set the tone all reaching and scoring in the first as Colin Yeaman doubled in the first run the other way and Anthony Martinez followed with a booming home run to center field to go up 3-0
- UCI added to it with seven runs in the second inning on just four hits with the big ones by Jacob McCombs and Will Bermudez each singling in two for a 10-0 edge
- The lead grew to 12-0 scoring on a wild pitch in the third and Frankie Carney tripling home a run with two outs in the fourth
- UC Riverside got on the board on a sacrifice fly to bring home a leadoff double to make it 12-1 in the fifth
- The Anteaters quickly regained momentum putting things away with a seven-run fifth inning from another two-run Bermudez single and three other RBI hits to lead, 19-1
- The scoring ended in the in the sixth as UCI scored in each of the first six innings of the game adding a Zach Fjelstad solo home run for the 20-1 lead
- Along with the thunderous bats was solid pitching from five Anteater arms
- Riley Kelly improved to 4-0 with one-run ball over five innings. He escaped a bases loaded jam in the third inning, and finished with at least one strikeout in every inning finishing with a career high eight
- Ryan Kysar and David Utagawa were spotless in the sixth and seventh each picking up a strikeout
- Andrew Grove made his Anteater Ballpark debut in the eighth loading the bases before getting the third out to leave them stranded
- Jack Ross closed things out striking out two in the 1-2-3 ninth inning
- The 20 runs is a season high and the fourth time UCI had scored 20 or more runs in the past three seasons
- Leading the hitting stars was Anthony Martinez with his third home run of the season and four RBIs and three runs scored with two hits
- Bermudez also had a four-RBI night all from his two hits
- Fjelstad and Carney each had three-hit games and drove in two with Carney reaching base five times and Fjelstad scoring three runs
- UCI saw a lot of pitches reaching 12 times via walk, three as a result of hit by pitch, and reached on catcher's interference in addition to the 16 hits
The series is just beginning with game two set for 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 29, with
Trevor Hansen on the mound for UCI against UC Riverside's Matthew Flores.
