No. 17 UC Irvine Breaks Away Late for 14-8 Win

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine baseball had its hands full Saturday in Anteater Ballpark staving off a UC Riverside comeback to win 14-8 and claim another series victory.
  • Trevor Hansen was dialed in from the get-go retiring the first 14 batters he faced
    • Hansen piled up 10 strikeouts, his most in a start in his UCI career, adding a K in each of his first six innings
    • He pitched into the seventh inning allowing four earned runs to run his record o 5-0 on the season
  • The offense was stifled one time through the order by UCR starter Matthew Flores, but the second time through got things going
    • Frankie Carney singled to lead a string of four straight hits in the third all with two outs to take the lead
    • Colin Yeaman tripled the other way to make it a 1-0 lead
    • He was followed by Anthony Martinez with an RBI, and he would score on a Jacob McCombs single to make it 3-0
  • The Highlanders battled back scoring two runs as a result of breaking Hansen's perfect game closing the game to 3-2 in the fifth.
  • UCI responded well with three in the bottom of the inning highlighted by Chase Call's two-run double down the left field line to go back up, 6-2
  • UC Riverside would not go away getting the three runs back in the seventh to whittle the deficit down to 6-5
  • The 'Eaters clapped back with an eight-run seventh inning to put some distance between the teams
    • Chase Call sparked the inning with a two-run home run to center field to grow the lead to 8-5
    • The hitters went on a tear with the next nine hitters reaching base from seven hits of nine total in the inning to lead 14-5
    • The big blow came from Frankie Carney shooting a ball up the third base line to score three on a double
  • UCR continued to chip into the Anteater lead getting as close as 14-8 before Jaxton Andeel induced the final out
  • UCI did it a different way on Saturday pounding out a season-best 19 hits after reaching base 16 times Friday night via free passes
    • Seven 'Eaters had multiple hits led by Yeaman's four-hit game
    • Chase Call had four RBIs to lead the way including his home run that tied him for the UC Irvine career record at 25
    • Carney had three hits, runs, and RBIs out of the leadoff spot
The series concludes Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch. UCI enters with a 20-5 record and 10-1 Big West record winners of nine in a row. Both starters are still to be determined.
