Men's Golf Finishes Third at UC San Diego Invitational

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The UC Irvine men's golf team closed out the UC San Diego Invitational with a top-three showing Tuesday at Torrey Pines South Course.
 
The Anteaters recorded their best round of the tournament to move up one spot to finish third in the 20-team field. They combined for a total of 891 (304-297-290).
 
New Mexico State claimed the team title at 885, while Arkansas State was two strokes back in second. The Red Wolves' Thomas Schmidt was the individual champion at 5-under 211 (71-68-72). Schmidt was the only golfer to shoot under par for the tournament.
 
Freshman Jack Yu led the 'Eaters in a tie for fourth with a 54-hole score of 220 (74-75-71). He had two eagles and a birdie to come in at 1-under 71 in the final round. Yu eagled the par-5, 615-yard 9th and the par-5, 570-yard 18th. It was his first top-10 finish of the season.
 
Junior Rei Harashima carded an even-par 72 on Tuesday. He had a team-best four birdies, all of which came on the back nine. Harashima tied for 10th at 222 (78-72-72).
 
Freshman Tommy Lin continued to move up the leaderboard, climbing 14 more spots into a tie for 28th. He closed out the three-day tournament with a 227 (82-72-73).
 
Sophomore Jason Tang (228) tied for 33rd, while freshman Owen Davis-Piger (232) tied for 65th to round out UCI's 5-count-4 lineup.
 
The 'Eaters will be right back in action next week when they make their way to Maricopa, Arizona, for the Wyoming Cowboy Classic, March 31-April 1.
