IRVINE, Calif. – Forward
Kyle Evans led UC Irvine to a 73-60 victory over UC Riverside in the Big West opener at the Bren Events Center Thursday.
Evans led the way for the Anteaters, scoring 19 points, grabbing eight rebounds and adding five blocks to his NCAA-leading 32 blocks on the season. The senior went 7-11 from the floor, including knocking down his first career three-pointer.
The Anteaters win their third consecutive game and improve 6-4 overall and 1-0 in the Big West. UCR goes to 4-5 and 0-1.
HEAD COACH RUSSELL TURNER SAID:
"I feel good to win. Conference play is different, and I think that this team needs to grow into the consistent competitive expectations that come with conference play because in these games, every team can beat us. We have a big bullseye on our backs because of previous years' success, but these guys are going to have to learn how to generate. I thought they shot three-point shots tonight better than we have against Division I teams previously this year. I think that we can play a lot better than we did. But the season's going to have some ebbs and flows. I want to use this win as an opportunity for us to improve."
SENIOR KYLE EVANS SAID:
"I think we will continue to find our offensive identity. As each game goes on, we're learning more about each other and learning more about ourselves. I know that was something that we struggled with early on, but tonight we made 10 threes. That's something that we've really been focusing on, moving the ball on the offensive end. We know we're a good defensive team, but we know we can handle that side of the floor. too."
"Coach Turner always says these conference games are championship games. And I think that's why everyone on the roster comes here to Irvine, to compete for championships. Coming out here every night, trying to compete, get better, and just fighting with each other, that's why we play the game. It's been a lot of fun and tonight was a great night."
