
Fardanesh, Amiryavari Advance to Quarterfinals at Big West Fall Invite

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – UC Irvine men's tennis combined for six singles victories through the first two rounds of The Big West Fall Invite Thursday at UC Santa Barbara's Arnhold Tennis Center.
All four Anteaters won their first-round match, while graduate student Sohrob Amiryavari and junior Max Fardanesh advanced to tomorrow's quarterfinals.
Fardanesh outlasted UC San Diego's Prathinav Chunduru, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4) in the Round of 32. He then bounced back from a first-set loss to take down Kosuke Nakanishi of Hawai'i, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, for his second victory of the day.
Amiryavari started with a three-set win as he also came from behind to top Timothy Li (UH), 5-7, 6-4, 6-1. In the Round of 16, Amiryavari came up short in the opening set and was up 2-1 in the second when his opponent, Charlie Underwood (UCSB), retired due to injury.
Sophomore Ruining Huang and graduate transfer Tal Goodman added wins in the Round of 32. Huang upended Michael Forticq of UCSD, 6-2, 6-3, before dropping a straight-set decision to the Rainbow Warriors' Azuma Visaya. Goodman dispatched UC Riverside's Noris Nedelcovici, 6-0, 6-1, in his UCI debut. He then came up short against UC Davis' Lucas Bollinger in a tightly-contested match, 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4.
UC Irvine is back in action tomorrow at UCSB with the singles quarterfinals and the first two rounds of doubles. Four Anteaters will also begin play at the San Diego Veterans Tennis Classic.
