LAS CRUCES, NM—Sophomore
Katelyn Kong is tied for first place after the opening round of the Golf Iconic Classic at the New Mexico State Golf Course.
Kong carded an impressive five-under par 67 with five birdies on the first day. Her career-low score of 67 is tied for sixth-best all-time at UCI.
As a team, the Anteaters shot a round of 284 which is tied for the fourth lowest in school history. UCI sits in a tie for fourth place, hoping to chase down leader Boise State who had a round of 276 Monday.
Graduate student
Jenny Chang is tied for 13
th with a two-under par 70. Chang recorded three of her four birdies on the back nine.
Chang is tied for second in Par 3 scoring (2.5), while Kong is tied for second on Par 4s (3.70).
Sophomore
Katherine Gerbing is tied for 40
th with a round of 73 followed by
HaYoung Lee in a tie for 53
rd place with a score of 74 and
Alona Avery tied for 77
th at 76. Gerbing is tied for sixth in pars with 14.
The tournament continues with two more rounds Tuesday and Wednesday starting each morning at 7:30 PT.
