TULSA, Okla. - UC Irvine senior Noah Zamora's run at the ITA All-American Championships came to an end Friday afternoon at Case Tennis Center.
Zamora started the day with a win over an SEC opponent in the consolation Round of 32, taking down No. 64 Miguel Perez Pena of Georgia in straight sets. The two went back-and-forth in the opening frame before Zamora broke serve to pull ahead, 6-5, and then finished strong for the 7-5 victory.
In the second set, Zamora once again broke serve to take a 4-3 lead. He kept the momentum on his side the rest of the way, leaving no doubt in a 7-5, 6-3 triumph.
In his second match of the day, Zamora was pitted against Michigan State's Matthew Forbes for a spot in tomorrow's consolation Round of 16. He opened with an impressive first-set victory, but Forbes was able to come from behind for the 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 win.
Zamora finished the main draw with a 2-2 singles record, defeating opponents from Tulsa and Georgia. He also teamed up with Hiroki Sakagawa to upend Miami's Martin Katz/Antonio Prat in a pre-qualifying consolation doubles match.
UC Irvine is scheduled to continue its fall tournament slate next weekend at the UC Santa Barbara Fall Classic (Oct. 4-6) and the San Diego Veterans Tennis Classic (Oct. 4-6).
