Anteater Duo Heads to San Luis Obispo for Big West Decathlon

May 02, 2024

IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's track & field team kicks off the 2024 Big West Championships with the decathlon, May 3-4, at Cal Poly's Miller & Capriotti Athletics Complex in San Luis Obispo. The two-day, 10-event competition gets underway Friday at 11 a.m., while Saturday's action is slated for a 10:30 a.m. start.

Senior Josh Farmer and junior Max Daniels are entered in this weekend's multi-event championship.

Josh Farmer, a two-time All-American, will be making his Big West decathlon debut. In 2021 and 2022, Farmer placed among the top-16 at the NCAA Championships, but did not compete at conference. He redshirted the 2023 campaign. This season, the San Diego native compiled a personal-record 7,703 points at the Bryan Clay Invitational (April 11-12) to rank first in The Big West, eighth in the region and 11th in the nation. It is also the second-best score in school history. Farmer's father, Matt, is a UCI track & field alum and was a three-time Big West champion in the decathlon (1990-92).

Max Daniels enters the weekend ranked third in the conference, 16th in the region and 20th in all of NCAA Division I with a personal-record 7,435 points which he established at the Bryan Clay Invitational, April 11-12. This year, the Santa Maria, California, native has set PRs in all 10 events, including in the long jump where he cracked UCI's all-time top-10 with a best of 7.39 meters (8th). Daniels started strong in the decathlon at the 2023 Big West Championships with the top 100m time of the meet but was unable to continue due to injury.

The remainder of the Big West Championship events are slated for May 10-11 at Cal Poly.
