No. 19 Anteaters Drop Heartbreaker in 11 Innings

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine baseball saw a chance to sweep the weekend series against UC Davis slip away with a miraculous ninth-inning comeback leading to a 12-10 loss in 11 innings Sunday at Anteater Ballpark.
  • The Anteater bats were working early taking the lead on a four-run second inning. Chase Call crushed a solo home run to start things off, and three more runs with two outs made it a 4-0 lead
  • UCI added a run in the fourth to go up 5-0, and after a UC Davis run in the top of the fifth, the Anteaters came back with four more runs in the bottom as Thomas McCaffrey started it off with a solo home run, and run-scoring hits by Woody Hadeen and Jo Oyama put UCI on top, 9-1
  • Brandon Luu and the pitching staff was marvelous through eight innings. Luu went five innings allowing a run and no-hit the Aggies through the first four innings.
  • Tim Grack, Michael Pirrello, and David Utagawa all followed with scoreless innings allowing one baserunner over the late innings
  • UC Davis found another gear down to their final three outs. After walks to start the inning and a pair of singles, UCD was on the board with their first run of the inning.
  • The first six Aggies reached in the inning to tighten things up to a 9-4 ballgame before Ricky Tibbett got two outs.
  • UC Davis found more life with two outs shooting three straight hits capped by Braydon Wooldridge's bloop double to score two and tie it up at 9-9.
  • The game went extra innings where the Aggies got a run in the top half to take their first lead of the weekend, 10-9.
  • UC Irvine answered down to their final strike as Dub Gleed clobbered a home run to tie it back up at 10-10
  • The Aggies kept the momentum homering for the lead in the 11th inning and adding an insurance run to make it a 12-10 game
  • UCI got the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the 11th, but were unable to find another answer
UCI's weekend ends on a down note, but still finish with a series win and are 2-1 in Big West play, 15-3 overall. Next game on the docket comes in Anteater Ballpark as UCI starts up a three-game series with Cal State Bakersfield that begins Friday, March 22
