FULLERTON, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's track & field team had five individuals combine for 18 points on the first day of the Big West Championships at Titan Track Complex.
Justin Willingham scored in the discus with a fourth-place finish. Willingham's top mark of the day came on his sixth and final attempt where he went for a personal-record 53.23m (174-7). He was one inch shy of the 10th-best mark in program history.
On the track, a pair of sophomores totaled seven points in their first career 10,000-meter race.
Jacob Bustamante led the way in fourth with a time of 30:43.01, while
Zeid Hussain had a seventh-place showing (30:49.28).
Joshua Schuld and
Cameron Smith both put points on the board in the steeplechase. Schuld took fifth in a lifetime-best 9:06.00, and Smith was seventh at 9:19.37.
Two Anteaters advanced out of the 110m hurdle prelims.
Drew Pickett ran a personal-record 14.08 to move up to No. 6 in school history.
Maxwell Jefferson will join Pickett in tomorrow's final as he also clocked a lifetime-best 14.49.
Malcolm Overbaugh is a Big West finalist in both the 100m and 200m. In his second 100m race of the season, he had the eighth-fastest prelim time at 10.63. Overbaugh also won Heat 2 of the 200m in a personal-record 21.26 to rank 10th among UCI's all-time leaders.
Eric Parker was seven hundredths of a second behind the last qualifier in the 400m as he ended up 10th overall with a time of 48.72.
Quincy Stokes was 12th in the hammer throw at 54.53m (178-11), and
Elijah Yoshinaga (6.76m) was 13th in the long jump in his Big West debut.
The 'Eaters will wrap up the Big West Championships tomorrow, starting with the javelin at 10 a.m. Action on the track is then slated for a 1 p.m. start and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
