'Eaters Win Four Events in Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Irvine women's track & field team had four event wins Friday at the Challenge Cup in Santa Barbara.
 
Deandra Tyler won the shot put for the second week in a row and third time this season. She finished ahead of the pack by three feet with a toss of 48-04. Cassious Fiaui (43-04.25) and Nyla Baker (43-03) also registered personal records to place among the top-five, while Sydney Gontang took seventh with a lifetime-best 41-08.5. Fiaui and Baker entered UCI's record books at No. 9 and 10, respectively.
 
Shaelyn Amos earned an individual victory in the high jump, clearing a collegiate PR 5-01.25. Amos did not miss on each of her first three bar heights.
 
Reyna Johnson picked up her first win of the season with a leap of 19-02.75 in the long jump.
 
On the track, UCI closed out the one-day meet with a first-place finish in the 4x400 relay. Amari Fraser, Mia Marquez, Lauren Aquino and Alexis Alexander combined for a winning time of 3:49.63.
 
Fraser also led the Anteaters with season bests in both hurdle events. She was the runner-up in the 400H (62.65) and fourth in the 100H (14.38). Johnson added an eighth-place showing in the 100H with a season-best 14.79, while heptathletes Jolie Robinson (15.14), Amos (15.25) and Laura Sangiacomo (16.04) notched personal bests.
 
Alexander took second in the 800m (2:11.17), and Aquino did the same in the 400m (57.64).
 
Alana Odom ran a personal-record 25.17 to place third in the 200m, while Samantha Bartz wasn't far behind in fourth (25.33). Bartz was also fifth in the 100m (12.09).
 
Johnson, Bartz, Odom and Aryel Coats clocked a season-best 46.51 in the 4x100 relay.
 
Hana Nip scored in the 1500m, running a season-best 4:44.69 to finish sixth overall.
 
Tyler was UC Irvine's top performer in the discus where she placed third at 164-03. DeAna Davis also put points on the board with a lifetime-best 157-09 putting her in sixth. In the discus, Baker was fifth and Nadia Combs-Mahone was eighth.
 
UC Irvine will be back in action next week with four local meets as it makes its way to the Bryan Clay Invitational (April 12-14), Pacific Coast Intercollegiate (April 13), Beach Invitational (April 14-15) and Mt. SAC Relays (April 14-15).
