Box Score SAN DIEGO, Calif. – UC Irvine concluded their season in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Big West Women's Tennis Championships after dropping 4-0 to the top seed Hawai'i.
Hawai'i earned the first point of the match in doubles play after earning the 6-1 win at No. 2 and 6-2 victory at No. 3. The sister duo of
Carolyna Fowler and
Emily Fowler were up 5-4 at No. 1 when the Rainbow Wahine clinched the tally.
The Anteaters came into this matchup still hungry from their meeting with Hawai'i just a few days ago and were able to sneak in early points.
C. Fowler moved into the No. 6 singles spot for today's match and forced UH's Anna Kern to an extra point battle where Kern took the set 7-5. The freshman Fowler held the 4-2 edge over her opponent before they walked away with the set unfinished.
In an incredible effort in a tough No. 1 singles battle,
Jenna Schlatter came away with the 6-4 victory in the first set after going close to point for point with Hawai'i's Ana Vilcek. The second set was tied 2-2 when the match concluded.
"Today, we came in with a game plan on how we wanted to play Hawai'i for doubles and singles," remarked assistant coach
Benjamin Cook. "Our No. 1 doubles especially executed well on their game plan but weren't able to finish it. After doubles, we turned our attention to singles with game plans on how we wanted to approach our match up. Jenna at No. 1 did well, executing her game plan on a tough opponent to go a set up. Haily and Carolyna were fighting hard in their matches, and it was incredible to see the whole team compete well."
"We really see the potential this team has, and we are looking forward to what next year has in store for us!"
