FIRST SERVE
Third-seed UC Irvine will face second-seed Long Beach State in a semifinal match of the 2023 OUTRIGGER Big West Men's Volleyball Championship, presented by The Hawaiian Islands Friday (Apr. 21) at 7:30 p.m. at the Bren Events Center.
The winner advances to the Championship match Saturday (Apr. 2) at 7:30 p.m. against the winner of the Hawaii/UC Santa Barbara match.
STORYLINES
UCI advanced to the semifinals after a 3-0 first round victory over six-seed CSUN.
As a team, UCI hit .405 (41-11-74), the sixth time UCI has hit .400 or better this season. They also held an 8 to 3 ace advantage.
The Anteaters were led by outside hitter Hilir Henno who posted a match-best 12 kills and four aces.
UCI had important contributions by reserves Will D'Arcy and Akhil Tangutur. D'Arcy. Tangutur made his second start of the season at the pin and added four kills and a team-best six digs. D'Arcy hit .625 on five kills in eight swings without an error.
Last night, UCI snapped a four-match losing streak and improved 17-10 overall. 17 wins are the most since the squad was 18-11 in 2019.
The Anteaters are 9-4 on Court 21 this season.
UCI has won a conference tournament three times, capturing the MPSF championship title in 2007, 2012 and 2015.
UCI has met LBSU six times in the postseason overall going 0-6, including 0-2 at the Big West Championship.
The Anteaters and Beach met in the semifinals last year with LBSU taking the 3-1 victory.
UCI has dropped the last four outings versus The Beach, including two last week.
The Anteaters hit a season--low .116 in a 3-0 loss in Long Beach then couldn't hold off The Beach in a 3-2 loss in Irvine after winning the first two sets.
The Beach out-blocked UCI 26 to 15.
