Andar Runs Third-Fastest 5000m in Program History

LOS ANGELES - The UC Irvine women's track & field team combined for 10 personal records in three events at the Bob Larsen Distance Carnival Friday evening at UCLA's Drake Stadium.
 
The 'Eaters took three of the top-six spots in the 5,000-meter run. Sameen Andar led the way with an eight-second personal-record 16:36.87. She was third overall and moved up five spots to No. 3 in school history.
 
Hannah Chau wasn't far behind in fourth, crossing the finish line in a lifetime-best 16:41.98, which ranks ninth among UCI's all-time leaders. Evelin Meza rounded out the trio in sixth at 16:54.59. It was her fastest 5K as an Anteater and just missed entering the program's top-10.
 
Montgomery Allison set the tone in the first event of the meet with a runner-up finish in the steeplechase. Allison clocked a personal-record 10:50.58, which ranks fifth in program history.
 
Malia Gay led a large UCI contingent in the 1500m where she took 11th out of 71 with a time of 4:32.61. Cathy Salazar-Gasca also ran a lifetime-best 4:34.06 to place 15th. Tea Akiaten, Stella Knobbe, Roxane Thomas, Madison Elliott and Elizabeth Melcher all registered personal bests in the 1500m as well.
 
The hammer throw was contested earlier in the afternoon. Deandra Tyler was the team's top finisher in fifth (161-0), while DeAna Davis was 10th (149-1).
 
UC Irvine returns to Drake Stadium tomorrow for the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational.
