Playing With A Purpose

| By:

UC Irvine will debut Court 21 on Saturday (Apr. 9) when the Anteaters host CSUN at 7:00 p.m. The new Taraflex court is named for Tim Vorenkamp, the older brother of UCI's junior setter Patrick, who passed away in 2016 from a rare cancer, synovial sarcoma. Patrick shared Tim's inspiration and the importance of his legacy.

Court 21

Tim started playing volleyball when I was in 5th grade. I remember going to his tournaments. I remember how he played with total passion. He would dive through chairs and scorers' tables to pursue stray digs. He would lead through passionate action and words. He never gave up. Volleyball brought out all of these amazing qualities in Tim. And it inspired me to take the same journey.

Tim is the reason I began playing this sport. He is the reason I fell in love with this sport. He is the reason why I will continue to play this sport up until the day my body gives out. I pursue constant improvement because I know he would want me to become my best. Not just for my own sake, but to honor the gift I have been given. To serve the people around me.

Tim lived for others. I believe my time and my purpose at UC Irvine is to make sure this legacy is fully established. In the time I have, I hope to live and play for my teammates. I hope future generations of Anteaters will be inspired to do the same. I believe that Court 21 will be a powerful reminder of Tim's legacy and his call to action: To Live for Others. To play with passion. To never give up on hope.

Patrick
