Fitzhugh Paces UCI on First Day in Palm Desert

PALM DESERT, Calif. –
Henry Fitzhugh carded a season-best 71 to lead the UC Irvine men's golf team on the first day of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate Wednesday at The Classic Club.
 
Fitzhugh is among the top-20 in a field of 114 golfers as he closed out the opening round in a tie for 13th. He had a steady round with four birdies, including three on the back nine to get to 3-under with four holes remaining. Fitzhugh then bogeyed Nos. 16 and 17 to come in at 1-under 71.
 
Darien Zhao is tied for 46th at 2-over 74, while Kolbe Irei, Nathan Irwin and Johnny Bai all shot a 78 (+6) to tie for 86th. Zhao had an eagle on the par-5, 568-yard fourth hole, while Irwin did the same on the par-5, 560-yard 14th.
 
The Anteaters combined for a 5-count-4 total of 301 to sit in 17th place. Charlotte and Long Beach State are currently tied for the lead at 3-under 285.
 
Federico Gutierrerz (Seattle U), Kyle Cox (UT Arlington) and Bryce Waters (Wyoming) are tied atop the individual standings at 4-under 68.
 
UCI returns to The Classic Club tomorrow for the second round of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate with tee times starting at 7 a.m.
