On July 29th, U.S. women's water polo under coach Dan Klatt won an 18-5 decision over the ROC. UCI advances to the quarterfinal knockout round, facing Canada tonight at 10 p.m. PST.
MEN'S INDOOR VOLLEYBALL (USA - David Smith/Brian Thornton - Coach / FRANCE - Kevin Tillie)
The U.S. and France each finished with two wins in Pool B action, but France moves on to the quarterfinals due to points (8-6).
Kevin Tillie and the French team handed the Russian Olympic Committee their only loss of Pool Play with a 3-1 victory (25-21, 20-25, 25-17, 25-20). Then, in the longest Olympic match in terms of points (249), France went the distance, but couldn't hold off Brazil in a 3-2 loss (22-25, 39-37, 17-25, 25-21, 18-20). Tillie added a kill and a dig in three sets off the bench.
The French will meet Pool A winner Poland Tuesday at 5:30 a.m. in the knockout round.
In the final match of pool play Sunday, the United States lost to Argentina 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-23) and did not advance to the quarterfinal round. David Smith was inserted in the third set and had two kills and a block. Prior to that match, the U.S. dropped a hard-fought match against Brazil, 3-1 (32-30, 23-25, 21-25, 20-25). Smith came off the bench in two sets, recording two kills and a block.
WOMEN'S INDOOR VOLLEYBALL (USA - Michelle Bartsch-Hackley)
The U.S. Women's Volleyball Team won Pool B with a 4-1 record. After suffering their first loss of the tournament to the Russian Olympic Committee on July 31, the Americans bounced back to finish group play with a 21-25, 25-16, 25-27, 25-16, 15-12 win over Italy on August 2. Michelle Bartsch-Hackley, who put away the final kill of the match, ranked second on the team with 17 points (13 kills, 2 blocks, 2 aces) in the five-set victory. The U.S. advances to the quarterfinals where they will face the Dominican Republic at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, August 4 (Pacific Time = 9 p.m. on Tuesday, August 3).
MEN'S SWIMMING (Dave Durden – Head Coach)
The U.S. men's swimming team, coached by UCI alum Dave Durden, finished up action in Tokyo last week. The men's team compiled 19 Gold medals, two Silver medals and two Bronze medals for a total of 23 medals which include each relay swimmer in prelims and finals. The Games were highlighted by Caleb Dressel who won five Gold medals, three individual and two relay. The men's 4x100 meter medley relay team of Ryan Murphy, Caleb Dressel, Michael Andrew and Zach Apple set a world record and earned a Gold medal to cap the meet.
WOMEN'S BEACH VOLLEYBALL (USA - Coach Jordan Cheng) Former men's volleyball assistant coach Jordan Cheng watched his team of Kelly Claes and Sarah Sponcil fall in the Round of 16 elimination match 2-1 (22-24, 21-18, 15-13) to Heather Bansley/Brandie Wilkerson of Canada. After winning the first set, the Canadians rallied from 4-10 down to force a third set. The youngest U.S. pair would trail 11-12 in the third, but a review on a Sponcil serve caused confusion when the in-stadium and broadcast showed good. Canada would ask for another review and the official would confirm that the ball was out. It was reported that the operator accidently just pushed the wrong button. Canada would go on to win 15-13.
