MEN'S SWIMMING (Dave Durden – Head Coach)
The U.S. men's swimming team, coached by Dave Durden, has accumulated four golds, one silver and two bronze in the opening week of action. Over the last three days, Caleb Dressel swam to a Gold medal in the 100-meter freestyle, touching in a new Olympic record time of 47.02. Bobby Finke also won Gold in the men's 800-meter freestyle setting a new American record in 7:41.87. Ryan Murphy also added a bronze medal in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 52.19.
WOMEN'S WATER POLO (USA - Dan Klatt – Assistant Coach; Melissa Seidemann, Kaleigh Gilchrist, Alys Williams, Jamie Neushul)
On July 27, U.S. women's water polo under coach Dan Klatt dropped its first pool play match, 10-9, to Hungary. Former UCI assistants Melissa Seidemann scored once while Alys Williams and Kaleigh Gilchrist each saw action. The team will be back in action tonight at 11:30 p.m. against ROC.
MEN'S INDOOR VOLLEYBALL (USA - David Smith/Brian Thornton (Coach) / France - Kevin Tillie)
On July 28, the United States beat Tunisia 3-1 (25-14, 23-25, 25-14, 25-23) in Pool B. David Smith started the first two sets and recorded three kills, an ace, and a dig. The U.S. Men will play Brazil next on Thursday, July 29 at 7:05 p.m. PT.
Kevin Tillie played in two sets in France's 3-2 loss to Argentina (25-23, 17-25, 20-25, 25-15, 13-15). France will take on the undefeated Russian Olympic Committee Thursday.
WOMEN'S BEACH VOLLEYBALL (USA - Coach Jordan Cheng)
Jordan Cheng's team of Kelly Claes and Sarah Sponcil beat Kenya's Gaudencia Makokha and Brackcides Khadambi in just 25 minutes, 2-0 (21-8, 21-6). The duo improves to 2-0 heading into the final pool play match Friday at 5:00 p.m. PT against Brazil's Ana Patricia/Rebecca.
WOMEN'S INDOOR VOLLEYBALL (USA - Michelle Bartsch-Hackley)
The U.S. Women's Indoor Volleyball Team defeated defending Olympic champion China on July 27 to improve to 2-0 group play. In a match that featured two of the top ranked teams in the world, it was the United States that came away with the sweep, 29-27, 25-22, 25-21. Outside hitter Michelle Bartsch-Hackley finished second on the squad with 15 kills. The U.S. remained defeated (3-0) after a tight 3-2 (25-19, 25-20, 17-25, 20-25, 15-12) win over Turkey. The Americans had to hold off Turkey after winning the first two sets. Bartsch-Hackley added six kills.
MEN'S WATER POLO (South Africa - Jason Evezard / Croatia - Lovre Milos)
Jason Evezard scored his first Olympic goal in South Africa's loss to the United States on July 27. Evezard, who started and played 24 minutes, found the back of the net to put South Africa on the board with 6:28 remaining in the second quarter. He played 18 minutes against Hungary as South Africa fell 23-1, dropping South Africa to 0-3 in group play. South Africa will meet Greece Saturday.
Croatia fell in a tightly-contested match to Australia in group play on July 27. After falling behind by four in the third quarter, Croatia scored three unanswered to cut the deficit to one, but Australia was able to hold on in the fourth for the 11-8 victory. Lovre Milos played 13 minutes off the bench. Milos then helped Croatia to a 13-8 victory over Montenegro. He added a goal in 13:39 minutes of action. After the teams were tied 1-1 after the first period, Croatia, who is now 2-1 in Group B, outscored Montenegro 6-4 to take the lead. Next up, Croatia faces Serbia on Saturday.
WOMEN'S CYCLING (USA - Amber Neben)
The 46-year-old Amber Neben made her third Olympic appearance and first since 2012 in the Time Trial event on Tuesday and Fuji International Speedway. Neben had her highest Olympic finish at fifth place, finishing as the higher of the two Americans, and was a little over a minute off the leader and 11 seconds off of the podium with a time of 31:26.13.
BADMINTON (USA - Phillip Chew and Ryan Chew)
The Chew brothers finished up their group play against Germany. The Chews fell in straight sets, 21-10 and 21-16. Their 2020 Olympic run ends in group play going 0-3.
