IRVINE, Calif. -- UC Irvine will have 16 representatives at the 2020 Summer Olympic Games held July 23-Aug. 8 in Tokyo, Japan.
Seven former Anteater student-athletes will be in action, four competing as athletes and three as coaches.
Former All-Americans and NCAA Champions David Smith (USA) and Kevin Tillie (France) will compete in men's indoor volleyball, while All-Americans Lovre Milos (Croatia) and Jason Evezard (South Africa) will compete in men's water polo. Evezard is currently completing his Master of Finance degree at UCI.
UCI head women's water polo coach Dan Klatt will be making his third appearance as an assistant coach for the U.S. women's water polo team, the two-time defending gold medalists. Klatt was an Olympian himself, competing for the U.S. men's water polo team in 2004.
Dave Durden is the head coach of the U.S. men's swimming team and former All-American and NCAA Champion Brian Thornton is serving as an assistant coach with the U.S. men's indoor volleyball team.
UCI has had at least four former student-athletes in each of the last 12 Olympiads.
Former UCI graduates and brothers Ryan and Phillip Chew will team-up in men's doubles in the badminton competition. It will be Phillip's second Olympic appearance and Ryan's debut. Former UCI grad student Amber Neben is a member of the U.S. cycling team (road-team trial) for the third time.
Former UCI assistant coaches Michelle Bartsch-Hackley (women's indoor volleyball), and Melissa Seidemann, Kaleigh Gilchrist, Jamie Neushul and Alys Williams (women's water polo) will compete for the U.S., while Jordan Cheng, a former men's volleyball assistant coach, is the coach for the women's beach pair of Kelly Claes and Sarah Sponcil.
Also in Tokyo will be Charlotte Drury who is the United State's second alternate in trampoline. Drury is a 2021 graduate in international studies and public health.
