U.S. Olympic Water Polo Team Announced
June 23, 2021 | Women's Water Polo, Olympics
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – UC Irvine water polo head coach Dan Klatt will be on the bench for the 2021 U.S. Olympic Women's Water Polo Team as an assistant coach.
This will be Klatt's third Olympic Games as an assistant coach (2012, 2016) and his fourth Olympic appearance overall after competing for the U.S. Men's Olympic Team in 2004.
Klatt will look to lead Team USA to its third-straight gold medal. He has helped lead the women's water polo program to be the most dominant team on earth, holding a No. 1 ranking and every major available title since 2014. Team USA enters Tokyo as the favorite to return to the top of the podium and will look to become the first nation ever to win three Olympic titles in women's water polo.
Klatt, who just concluded his 17th season at UCI, has led the Anteaters to six NCAA Tournament appearances and a national ranking as high as No. 3. He has amassed over 330 wins in his 17 years at the helm for a .661 winning percentage. A UCI men's water polo alum, Klatt graduated in 2001 and was named an All-American in 1998. He was a member of the 2004 U.S. Olympic Water Polo team that competed in the Athens Games.
Four former UCI assistant coaches also made the Team USA roster including Alys Williams, Melissa Seidemann, Jamie Neushul and Kaleigh Gilchrist. Seidemann, who coached the Anteaters from 2017-2018, returns for her third Olympic Games while Gilchrist (2019) enters her second. Williams (2019) and Neushul (2018) are first time Olympians.
The Tokyo Olympic Games are scheduled to begin on July 23 with the women's water polo team slated to play its first game against Japan at 10 a.m. PST.
