RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Hannah Chau led the UC Irvine women's track & field team on the first day of the UC Riverside Distance/Sprints Invitational Thursday evening.

Chau earned her first collegiate victory, taking top honors in a 5000-meter field of 23 runners. Chau finished one second ahead of San Diego's Gianna Sbarbaro with a personal-record 16:46.61. She moved up one spot to No. 7 in school history, while her time also ranks fourth in the Big West this season. McKenna Paulson (17:57.17) and Claire Livengood (17:58.58) added top-10 showings with Livengood notching a lifetime best. Β

Cathy Salazar-GascaΒ placed third in the 800m with a Big West qualifying time of 2:14.31. She topped her previous best by over two seconds.

Competing in her second steeplechase, Nikki Fulcomer registered a personal-record 12:11.06, while Daisy Garcia was 15th out of 34 in the 1500m (4:57.91).

The Anteaters will continue the split meet tomorrow with the sprints/hurdles crew competing in Riverside and the throws squad making their way to Long Beach. Β
